DiffDog

Altova’s DiffDog software application is a diff/merge utility that works with text, directories and databases. This means you can use it to identify the differences between a couple of text files, directories or databases. It also means that you can use it to do away with these differences – merge text, sync directories, merge source code files.

The setup wizard that guides you through the installation process asks you to choose between a complete and a custom installation. Go with the latter and you will get to choose what features will be installed, select where the application will be installed, and pick if you want a DiffDog shortcut on your desktop.

Please note that DiffDog is not free, it is only free to try. When you’re done with the installation and you launch DiffDog for the first time, a prompt will invite you to request a free evaluation key, purchase a permanent key code, or enter a new key code.

DiffDog has a straightforward interface. The main panel presents file compare or directory compare windows that display files/directories side-by-side, highlighting the differences between them. Above this main panel there’s a File Menu and toolbars with buttons for various features and functions. It must be mentioned that you can pick and choose what toolbars are displayed on DiffDog’s interface.

You can use DiffDog to compare a couple of files, view the differences between these two files, and merge their differences. You can do the same with directories and databases. DiffDog provides support for textual comparison, XML comparison, binary comparison, and it can compare according to file extension settings.

DiffDog is available as a Professional and as an Enterprise Edition. Please note that DiffDog Professional does not provide support for database comparison.
